Why PB

Connection:
Participatory Budgeting (PB) strengthens the connection between the City of Durham and its residents by creating an open, collaborative process where everyone can contribute ideas and help decide how public funds are used. It’s a way for residents to work alongside local government to shape the future of their neighborhoods.

Participation:
PB invites community members to take an active role in identifying priorities and proposing projects that matter most to them. By engaging residents directly in decision-making, PB encourages shared ownership and helps ensure that city investments reflect the needs and aspirations of the people who live here.

Learning:
Beyond funding projects, PB builds understanding of how local government works and encourages lifelong civic participation. Residents who take part—whether by volunteering, submitting ideas, or voting—gain valuable insight into the budgeting process and learn how to make a meaningful impact in their community.
